Soho’s Berwick st. is a mini Mecca for street food – and the newly placed Pizza Pilgrims ensure the current residents remain in good company.
From a diminutive van/pizza oven combo comes fresh and made to order pies, which, for their first day, were impressive: A thin, smoky base, a good ratio of cheese to flavoursome tomato sauce, and on our version – chunks of Nduja (Italian spicy pork sausage) adding a slow and steady burn. The dough was slightly chewier than we prefer but all in all highly recommended for a pizza fix.
Balans Westfield doesn’t quite match up to my experiences with its older soho sibling.
An attractively presented plate sadly consisted of dry dices of beef and bland shreddings of potato, topped with ever so slightly overdone poached eggs.

Taro – tonkatsu bento
Taro is always a good bet for that quick, hit the spot Japanese fix; cheap, canteen style, with a broad menu to suit most people’s taste.
For the indecisive, there’s a good range of bento boxes to cover whatever appetite: the ton katsu pictured, while not mind blowing, is good value comfort food.
When you can’t get a seat downstairs (which is likely most of the time), feel free to comfort yourself with a pulled pork sandwich from the takeaway menu.
A sweet, airy brioche bun just about manages to contain a disarmingly flavourful pile of sweet, smokey flesh.
At £6 each, however, the portion size is sadly way too small – especially considering the value of a sit down meal inside.
